Prepare images for a website before uploading

Choose an image because it helps a visitor understand something, not because a section looks empty. A few well-chosen photographs are easier to review and maintain than a large unsorted gallery. Start with the originals you have permission to publish and keep a separate private copy.

Decide what each image is for

Label the main subject and intended placement. A workshop photograph might introduce the business; a close-up might explain a repair; a project image might belong beside a case study. Write those intentions in the description you provide to the builder. “Use this as the main image for the pottery workshop, with the table visible” gives more direction than “photo one.”

Review the contents carefully

Look for visible faces, house numbers, customer documents, computer screens and location details. Ask permission where necessary and remove sensitive material before uploading. Do not assume a public website will keep an image private because its original filename is obscure. Keep documents containing private information out of the media collection entirely.

Make the file practical

Resize an oversized photograph to a sensible display size and use an appropriate supported format. Check the exported version for readability and distortion. A transparent logo may suit PNG; a photograph may suit JPEG. Animation should have a useful purpose and should not make the page distracting or difficult to read.

Check the actual website result

Preview both narrow and wide layouts. A portrait crop and a landscape crop may hide different parts of the subject. Add meaningful descriptions when an image communicates information. Decorative images do not need to repeat the adjacent paragraph for assistive technology.

VollSite currently accepts JPEG, PNG and GIF images, plus public PDF and TXT documents, up to 5 MiB per file. Account and website limits also apply; Free has 50 MiB shared account storage and active Pro has 250 MiB. Videos and large downloads need external links. Adding a photo through a requested redesign uses a visible AI request, so give a clear placement description and review the completed preview before saving or publishing.
