Understand custom domains before connecting your website

A domain is the address people use to find a website. Registration gives you control of that name for the registration period; hosting serves the website’s content. They are separate services, so buying a domain does not automatically build a website or provide email.

Know which address you want to use

Decide whether visitors will use a platform address or a domain you own. Check spelling before sharing it widely. VollSite Free uses a shared address by website type. Pro supports a dedicated platform subdomain or the supported owned www connection. Domain registration and its renewal cost are separate from the website subscription.

Treat DNS changes carefully

DNS records connect parts of your domain to services. A website connection should not remove email records or change unrelated services. Before editing, record the existing configuration and identify the exact hostname you intend to connect. Do not replace every record with a provider example or share account passwords with a stranger offering setup help.

Verify ownership and HTTPS

Follow the platform’s ownership and connection steps for your actual domain. A certificate and working HTTPS need to be observed at the destination, not assumed from a saved form. Test the exact www address in a signed-out browser and confirm it shows your website. Keep the domain registered and renew it deliberately so the address remains yours.

Revisit links after connection

Check the address shown in the editor, QR materials, contact details and any search configuration. If you change an established address, plan how old links will behave. Do not promise every old address will redirect unless the platform actually supports that transition.

For VollSite, use the supported domain workflow rather than improvising apex or wildcard settings. An owned custom domain can also require separate authorization for its Search Console connection. Setup, certificate issuance and search discovery are different stages. If a connection fails, preserve existing working records while diagnosing the specific error, especially when the domain also carries your business email.
